Volunteer with us

We have plenty of opportunity for you to get involved here at Hope Community Foundation.  Our volunteering covers a wide range of expressions including:

  • Conventional volunteering for those who share our passion for people and for Sheffield and want to give something back to support others.
  • Short term work placements for those looking for work experience to develop their skills and confidence.
  • University placement opportunities for those looking to undertake community work as part of their studies.
  • Work Placements for those looking to develop their readiness for work. These combine with employability training to give you the skills and the confidence to get back into work or into work for the first time.

Below are some of the opportunities we currently have available, but we’d welcome a conversation with you to see where you might best fit.

“What I love most in my volunteering role is seeing families being provided for, the team spirit of love and care and being a part of such incredible project work!”

Opportunities to get involved

Take a look at the opportunities below.  Some are open to all whereas others require an application process because of the nature of what is involved, as often we are working with vulnerable people and safeguarding is a high priority for us.

At the heart of our work during the week is our Community Grocery.  We have over 2000 members who can access affordable food and provisions through the community grocery.  As a volunteer you will help our customers find what they need, be a friendly face for those visiting us and help to ensure the grocery itself is always kept well stocked and presented.  The Grocery is open Monday to Friday.

We also need people able to collect food donations from local suppliers for the Community Grocery as well as periodically helping to collect or deliver within the community and across other projects.  Times may vary throughout the week.    Contact us for more details by completing the volunteer form below.

Our Foundation cafe is a donation based cafe serving our visitors throughout the week.  We offer food and refreshments and a warm welcome, aiming to provide a place where people can meet and develop genuine connections without having to pay commercial prices for food and drink.  As a volunteer you’ll be behind the counter for the most of the time but will also get the opportunity to chat with our visitors and make them feel valued and welcome.

Polka Dots is our playgroup providing support and plan for pre-school children and their parents.  Our volunteers are vital in helping to set up and facilitate our play sessions and connecting with both parents and children in order to provide a warm, welcoming and engaging environment.

Our Jigsaw project is all about tackling loneliness and isolation by creating opportunities for people to meet others and do fun things together.  We run mostly throughout the week with some activities being for all ages and others being specifically for 55+ age group.  If you are confident with people and know how to make someone feel valued and special then let’s talk.

The Hope Centre is a big building that needs a lot of care and attention so that our visitors have the best possible experience when they come. Our Facilities team are actively upkeeping our building and improving it for our visitors.  If you are a dab hand at DIY and don’t mind getting your hands dirty then this could be for you.  Opportunities are available throughout the week but centre around Monday to Fridays 9am to 5pm.

Pathways is our listening and signposting service.  We aim to connect people through our Pathways Team, to the service they need in the area and offer a listening ear to support people through what may well be a really tough time in their life.  We operate throughout the week and welcome applications from anyone with the confidence and skills to be able to directly support our clients.

Each week we support people for whom English is not their first language to get to grips with English and to get to know how to find your way around life in Sheffield.  You don’t need to be an ESOL or TEFL qualified teacher to get involved although experience of working with people coming to the UK from other countries is a significant advantage.  Our group meets each Monday.

Our work involves a lot of behind the scenes work.  If you are more of a behind the scenes person who wants to help either in our admin team or with some of our creative design, social media of website maintenance then we would live to talk to you.

As a charity we rely on fundraising and bid writing to help us to do what we do.  We are looking to develop a team of people who have the ability to present a compelling argument to potential grant making trusts.  You may have experience or may not but we would be happy to hear from you.

Future Opportunities

Our projects are continuing to develop to serve our community better.  Here are a few areas which are coming up in the not too distant future which we are looking for Volunteers to support and lead.

Life Skills is a course designed to help people to do life well, covering a whole range of topics such as finance and relationships.  The course is run over 7 weeks and involves working with a small group of people guiding them through pre-prepared material.  Full training is provided for this role and we are looking to recruit a team by July 2024 ready to attend training in late Autumn for a January 2025 start.  There is a formal application for this role given the nature of the project itself.
